Things To Do In Gothenburg
Gothenburg - City Of Events
Gothenburg has made its name as a city where major sporting, entertainment and cultural events take place. Gothenburg’s large arenas, loyal audiences and carefully planned strategy have made the city into a leading events venue. When there is something big on, the whole city joins in the party.
Shopping Is A Way Of Life
Gothenburg is a lively city for shopping where you can find just about anything within an easy walk of the centre. There’s no shortage of interesting shops right in the heart of the city, and if you feel like exploring – or taking a short tram ride – then Järntorget, Linnéstaden, Haga old town, Vasastaden and the main boulevard, Avenyn, all offer great shopping too.
The city offers an agreeable mix of modern department stores, shopping centres and side streets. Big brand names jostle for space with small specialist shops. Trendy, traditional, cool, essential, exclusive or inexpensive – you’ll find them all here.
Culture And Attractions
The theatres draw packed houses. The music scene is flourishing. Gothenburg boasts a rich diversity of culture and many places of interest.
The Poseidon statue presides imposingly over Götaplatsen square, the city's cultural hub. Some of Gothenburg's 17 museums, 25 theatre stages and 38 cinema screens are located nearby.
But the city is not only home to established venues such as the City Theatre and Folkteatern, and gems like the Gothenburg Opera House, the Art Museum and Concert Hall with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. You will also discover many free theatres and an active free cultural scene.
Nightlife
Keen to check out Gothenburg’s nightlife? The city has a host of pubs, clubs, discos and dance-floors to choose from. Here are some of the well-known places focusing on different tastes, offering a wide selection of partying possibilities.
Gothenburg - The Green City By The Sea
Gothenburg is a beautiful city with many green spaces in the central parts of the city. Some of the parks and gardens are worth visiting at any given time of year.
Situated within walking distance of Slottsskogen city park, Gothenburg Botanical Garden is one of the biggest in Europe. Here you can enjoy 13,000 different species of plant, stroll around in the Wood Anemone Valley gully, or stop for a coffee in the cosy café.
The Garden Society of Gothenburg (Trädgårdsföreningen) is centrally located on the canal. Visit the Palm House, the Rosarium and the Plant house, or rent a sun lounger. There are two cafés, or you can bring your own picnic basket.
Sports And Activities
The ocean, the archipelago of islands, islets and skerries are the perfect venue for swimming, sailing and all kinds of watersports. In winter you may prefer one of the indoor swimming pools instead!
Angling is free along the coast, with the exception of salmon and sea-trout fishing during the winter. Regional and local permits enable you to fish some 50 waters. There is also plenty of land and forest in the region for lovers of the great outdoors. There are many exercise tracks and wilderness trails for hiking and canoeing. Golf-lovers have access to several idyllically situated 18-hole courses.
Archipelago
Being close to the sea makes Gothenburg special. And nowhere is the sea so close as in the archipelago.
Whether blue and tranquil or turbulent and restless, the sea is always a source of fascination. As are the cliffs, houses and boats.
A trip out into Gothenburg's archipelago is a magnificent experience whatever the season. Take the ferry from Saltholmen for the southern archipelago, it costs the same as a tram ride. In the summer season several boat excursions depart from Lilla Bommen harbour in the city center.
Vrångö, Brännö, Styrsö, Vargö and the other inhabited isles each have their own charm. All of the islands in the south are free of cars, and there are plenty of paths between the genuine fishing cottages and wonderful bathing rocks.
The northern archipelago includes Hönö, Öckerö and Björkö which can be reached by car ferry from Hjuvik, Hisingen
